After a timely counterattack from the men of Duke Hausman, they literally hacked the Boleños to bits. Then Commander’s Rapino’s bombardment came down. The intense and compact onslaught came from high above the mountain, and the Boleños sounded the retreat. The bombardment stopped the Boleños, and they ran to the opposite direction in a scattered formation as shells made holes on the grounds where they stood.

She finally reached a point where she could rest a little. The enemy appeared to have retreated, but a group of Boleños came running and they got hit again under enemy fire. Otto quickly ducked to the ground and pulled Ultima by her shoulder pauldron just as balls of fire flew over their heads, ricocheting off the trees several feet away from them. As she moved from the ground to a nearby rock, a flush of blood rushed to her face, making her senses more aware than before and speeding everything up. Ultima saw everything in fast motion, but it also gave her the strength to continue fighting. When Otto stood up also did Ultima.

Ultima stood next to Otto, all wet from the mud and slush, and the rush of blood allowed her to forget about the foul taste of death in her mouth.

With victory becoming increasingly likely, the winning side fought as if they were invincible. Some have had succumbed to a frenzy and were on a rampage against anybody standing in their way, while others probably imagined images of home and what they left behind.

The Boleños left fires and smoke among the heaped-up bodies of their dead, but from the distance, the enemy’s trebuchets fired balls of fire over Soren’s Army with infernal blast and power. It was the last attempt to help the last of the Boleños men escape. That last bombardment did nothing to bring back the hundreds of lives of their dead.

The mindboggling carnage covered the battlefield, but so too was the Tsestelago’s bravery. Two armies fighting each other for territory, but it was clear who won. The dead of the winning and losing sides lay in large groups across the valley. The toll on both nature and humanity was tremendous. Likely, it will take ages before the mountain and the valley will recover. The rubble, metal and debris have taken the place of trees, plants and flowers.

The battle ended, and it was good; Ultima had no more energy left in her. Her arms felt like lead and her head hurt. She couldn’t hear what anyone was saying next to her. Her sword became heavy, and her hands could barely hold on to the handle. She took off her helmet and her hair came off her bindings on the side of her face. Small braids flapped out. As the rain had stopped, she was all wet, just like all the others around her. Although mud covered the parts of her face not covered by her helmet, she had blood on top of mud.

“It is a woman. The warrior fighting next to you is a woman,” said Prince Soren to Otto.
